Cuba: Notes from behind the Coffee Curtain

Day 2: The chickens cats streets of Santa Clara

p>December 15, SANTA CLARA, Cuba — Our first full day in Santa Clara included a fuck-ton of walking, the worst spaghetti in the world, Che's cat, a yellow T-Rex, urban chickens and the most laid-back cops I've ever seen. Also horses and really dirty air.</p>

And if all that isn't enough, I'll leave you with a gratuitous shot of Che's Cat, a mere sample of the pic-spam you'll also be missing if you don't click through!

The Streets of Santa Clara!

Much envy. That's really exciting, and totally the kinds of things I like to do when I'm travelling. (I'm not much for beaches or resorts.)

It's a Bennett buggy! The one reason I'm looking forward to the fall of civilization is because that will become a thing again, and I find it aesthetically pleasing. ;)

Never done resorts, but ...

Our last full day and final night were spent in Varadero. The shittiest room of all, but the casa familiar was literally within about 30 metres of the ocean, so what the hell. You will get to see photos of my swimming. And maybe even in relative close-up whislts in swimming drunks. If I'm feeling especially masochistic.

Meanwhile, I've just discovered that I either did not take notes about my favourite day in Santa Clara, or that I accidentally wrote over them. Regardless, the next entry will be a day late and will be a retro-active reconstruction.

On the other hand it will include photos from Che's enormous mausoleum and video shot from the back of one of those horse carts (Bennett buggy? You're talking the four-wheelers, with benches on the sides?).

And then will come the long rant about customer service in a worker's paradise.

But for now, exuent.

Che's mausoleum!!!!!

Bennett buggies are cars that have stopped functioning as cars because of fuel shortages or fuel being too expensive, and become horse-and-carriages instead. Named after Canadian PM Bennett during the Great Depression.

Re: Never done resorts, but ...

Unfortunately, no cameras allowed inside the mausoleum. But we took plenty outside.

When you mentioned the Bennett buggies, instead of Canadian history, my mind went to literature and I kept trying to figure out why you thought Elizabeth Bennett's buggies were now hanging out in Cuba.

Happy new year!
