Small Pleasures [Jan. 24th, 2004|06:17 pm]
Young Geoffrey
I found myself more than once being rather unprofessional today.

Customers often ask where our office is located (I do tech support for an ISP, telling people that, yes, their new copy of Windows XP has come down with a virus, or worse, among other things) and, when I tell them Toronto, they often wonder what the weather is like here.

Today, I not only admitted it was quite cold, "for Toronto," but then proceded to brag, "Not that I want to brag," that I rode my bicycle in to work in it.

I enjoy the inevitable reaction, one that combines impressed surprise with a subtextual suggestion that I am, perhaps, not altogether sane.

Takes the sting out of numb finger-tips, it does.

You may now return to your regular programming.

Today, no. Nor yesterday. Not only am I a decade older than I was when I rode through 2 Ottawa winters in just about *every* conceivable form of inclement weather, but Toronto drivers simply aren't used to snow - in Ottawa, they drive through it 3 or 4 months out of the year, and I trust(ed) them not to run me down through negligence. (But my Inner Egoist (tm) wishes that I had.)
