Goodness (In Both the Exclamatory and Descriptive Senses) [Sep. 7th, 2007|05:24 pm]
Young Geoffrey
I had forgotten just how wise and wonderful a writer was Theodore Sturgeon. I wish I'd written that fan-letter when I had the chance.

What Sturgeon were you recently reading? He's definitely got a unique voice.

I was only introduced to his writing in University when I took an elective course in English Lit on Sci-Fi at UofT. Good course!

We read "More than Human", naturally.

Short fiction was Sturgeon's forte; you probably wouldn't go wrong in picking up the first collection you can find. Or you could sample a couple of them via this link.

The novella I read yesterday is called "The [Widget], the [Wadget], and Boff", included in a wonderful old (1959) anthology edited by Anthony Boucher, A Treasury of Great Science Fiction.

It's ostensibly "about" an alien experiment on a group of people living in a rooming house, but it's really about emotionally damaged people healing themselves. It's quite a beautiful piece of work.

I wish I'd written a fan-letter to Stanisław Lem.
