Memo to Sabotabby, re. Lev Grossman [Oct. 13th, 2015|02:02 am]

Some time ago, in one of your guises and I think in a remark directed towards someone other than yours truly, you mentioned Lev Grossman's Magicians trilogy as a fantasy (more than) worth reading.

Well. I'm only two-thirds of the way through the first book and so, more than normally aware that my opinion is subject to change, but thus far (mind you), I just want to say a heartfelt Thank you!.

At this point I'm even more baffled than I was before that Tolkien doesn't speak to you, because Grossman is sure as hell speaking to me. The man knows his teenagers and (I think) a whole helluva lot besides.

Long story short, I've never read a book like this one, and for those of us who love fantasy, that is a kudos in monstrously short supply.

So, thank you.

YAY I'm so glad you like it. Because most people don't seem to be able to finish it and hate the characters, and I take this personally because I related to the characters a lot. ;)

He gets fantasy and teenagers, and more to the point, he gets the kind of teenager I was. I can't wait to discuss it with you when you hit the end.

Me too

Even I sometimes feel as if I've become one of Those People who read fantasy (or watches Doctor Who) simply for the "pleasure" of dumping on it.

So it comes as a real relief when something genre comes along that I can really get into. Recently, Orphan Black, Jonathon Strange and Mr. Norrel and now (so far) The Magicians all fit the bill.

So far so good

I just found out they are (or think they are — no spoilers!) going to Fillory and was completely caught off-guard. The idea that the next two books will be as good as the first has been to this point delights me.

Re: So far so good

Oh man! I'm excited for you to keep reading! I borrowed the first one like... a year ago? from my friend Nick, after having heard much about it. It seemed like the few people who had read it either loved or hated it. I ended up devouring the first book then basically not buying groceries so I could get the other 2 immediately on my Kindle. I really think they're great, though I haven't done a reread and am hazy on some of the details, but the characters are enjoyable and easy to relate to, and the story does move along pretty well.
