Memo to Dilvalicious [Sep. 8th, 2004|08:16 pm]
Young Geoffrey
LJ really is being a cunt. I'm now getting your error message.

Bugger ... I suppose I'll just have to clean this dump up before flying off to the left coast tomorrow.

More likely they're still hung over from Labour Day partying. (Do they even have Labour Labor Day in the States?)

I thought so. It's somehow embarassing that I really wasn't completely sure.

Re: fly safe!

'long as I'm not flying the plane - and let's hope it won't come to that - I figure I can drink as many as they'll serve me for free. And, since I'm flying Westjet, that's probably none.

I have full confidence that the apartment fire will be the best apartment fire ever.

I love you too, sweetie; I'm already counting the days until I see you again.

Damn codes.

I saw your icon today in one of the University of Toronto's bookstores, emblazoned on a Peanuts collection. Then I remembered a comic I once did with my friend. Here it is.

Re: Damn codes.

I know a reply to this is one hell of a long time coming; I was in Victoria when you posted it and didn't see it until a day or two later. At that time, I made a mental note to give it a longer look, but my preliminary opinion was that it was a cheap and sophomoric "homage - you know, "Let's take Peanuts to the absolute extreme!" (and thereby insult Schultz's oevre.

There's a lot to be said for keeping one's mouth shut about one's first reactions.

You somehow managed to catch the feel of Schulz's drawing style without a hint of imitation; the story itself (based on those two pages) seems delicately balanced between pathos and bathos - and I would really like to find out which way it fell.

I presume you released that as a zine, or part of one - any chance I can purchase a copy off of you?

On an entirely different vein, but still on the subject of Peanuts, some years ago I purchased a zine called You're short, bald and ugly, Charlie Brown, credited to one Dr. Casey "Sparky" Finnegan" (allegedly produced by three of Hogtown's premier "alternative" cartoonists; certainly there were 3 different styles clearly present in the (re)writing). The art was all by Schultz, with the captions changed.

This was sophomoric, at least some of it (Linus and Charlie Brown have anal sex; Lucy discovers that, "Christ, that John Holmes has a fuckin' big dick!"), while another section verged on the surreal.

Sometimes copyright laws really annoy me.

P.S. (Sorry about the double-post; I messed up the coding in the first one.)

Re: Damn codes.

Well, there's just so much that, while charming in a child's situation, could become disastrous in the adult world. For example, Charlie Brown's curse of his team losing every game translates nicely/badly into his platoon losing every engagement in Vietnam. Lucy's refusal to take no for an answer from Schroeder becomes sexual harassment. And so forth.

Yeah, the idea itself is sort of overdone. But we were in high school and not too aware of standard cliches. (It wasn't part of a zine, alas, just for our own amusement.)

I love the title "You're Short, Bald and Ugly, Charlie Brown," but the rest sounds like it may not live up to it.

Anyway, I'm glad you ended up liking it, or at least appreciating aspects of it.

Pity - I wouldh like to read the rest of it.

As for YSBUCB, it's not all scatological. (Er, only about 2/3 of it.) I like to think I don't normally enjoy that sort of thing (though my affection for the South Park movie might suggest otherwise), but the sheer incongruity of it really caught my fancy.
