Ugh I don't know what York is on about. Who on earth asks for this kind of accommodation?

Religous nuts of the mysogynist variety, obviously

But yours was a rhetorical question, wasn't it? If I get the time and energy, this fooferaw could serve as a could jumping-off point to discuss why I am nevertheless very much opposed to the Quebec separatist government's so-called charter of secular values.

Ugh but the worst is it's still going on. The dean says he has "unwavering commitment to gender equity". Yeah, right.

Re: Religous nuts of the mysogynist variety, obviously

I actually get where the Dean is coming from; he is (or thinks he is) strictly adhearing to Ontario's human rights legislation. I haven't read the particular laws in question, so won't comment on the specifics.

But what I think you're saying "Ugh" to (and what I know I am!) is that one would hope people in that sort of position would go beyond strict legalism and have the balls (or ovaries) to take a fucking stand based upon right and wrong.

In my opinion, the right to not be treated like a dirty piece of shit trumps the right of someone's religion to treat someone like a dirty piece of shit.

And if the law says the bigot should be given precedence over the people being abused, then the law is an ass and people should fucking say so.

Ahem.

Apparently I feel quite strongly about this, don't I?

Re: Religous nuts of the mysogynist variety, obviously

Perhaps, but better in the faith of than the letter, right? That's how the law's been formed. And he's just...argh. University is supposed to require critical thinking. Use it, Dean!

I've never actually looked closely at Ontario's legislation, but the Charter says "The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society" right at the very beginning. Well, after the part they declare the laws are founded upon knowing the supremacy of God *eyeroll* Is it reasonable to accommodate someone to the point where you are infringing on others? I don't think so. But it depends on where "reasonable" falls. And honest, the student accepted the ruling. The dean...IDK.
