Nerd love is being reminded that there was Who Before Davies, and kick-ass companions as well. Also, nerd love is publicly announcing the making of a new icon. The screenshot below from "Remembrance of the Dahleks", episode 152, part 2 (Series 25).

Ace was always one of my favourite companions. Rather than emoing the dalek to death she beat them up with a baseball bat.

Companion love

Since they've already brought back Sarah Jane Smith and the Brigadeer (sp?) (you are watching The Sarah Jane Adventures, aren't you?), Ace, Romana and Leelah are the three others I would love to see again (though Romana, presumably, went down with Gallifrey).

But yes, there is something about Ace's love of weaponry and explosions that was absolutely delightful.

Re: Companion love

The Sarah Jane Adventures are consistently better than RTD's version of Doctor Who.

Re: Companion love

I'll take that as a "yes", then.

I'm not sure I agree with you, unless by "consistently" you mean that it hits neither the highs ("Blink", "The Doctor Dances") nor the lows (anybody wanna burn "Gridlock"?) of Doctor Who. So far, I've only dribbled a few tears over The Sarah Jane Adventures.

In truth, the show seems to capture the spirit of the old Who better than new Who does. A small show, happily doing it's thing without having to worry about out-doing last week's spectacle or being self-conscious about being a genuine hit.

I've really got to write up a critical appreciation before the new(!) series commences.

Re: Companion love

That pretty much sums it up. NuWho has moments where I've loved it ("Blink") and moments where I just want to stab Rusty in the eyes with a fork ("Magic!Jesus!Gollum!Doctor" at the end of Series 3, or the utter shite that was "Fear Her"- at lreast "Gridlock" had Giant Crabs). The Sarah Jane Adventures has been consistently good. Not necessarily original, its covered several of the standard sci-fi plots, but its always done them perfectly well, and none of the companions ever feel more important than another- unlike RTDs apparent obsession with how great Rose Tyler was.

Re: Companion love

Oi. Don't remind me of season 3!

On the other hand (and yes, to contradict myself), I have this (utterly baseless) feeling that The Sarah Jane Adventures will really hit its stride during the upcoming season, morphing from a better-than-solid children's family show into something really special.

...and none of the companions ever feel more important than another...

Interesting point. I'm not sure that I agree with you, but it feels correct. Must ponder ...
