I can haz invite pelease? [May. 5th, 2009|02:18 pm]
Young Geoffrey
All right, I'm starting to feel left out. And when Young Geoffrey feels left out it's not long until Bitterness rears it's bile-dripping head.

And no one wants that, do we Gentle Readers?

Anybody got an invite to that fershlugginer Dreamwidth thingy?

Please and thank you.

You are invited to a pants party.

Somehow ...

... I don't think that's quite the same thing.

But where's the party?

Re: Somehow ...

The.. pants. The pants party.

"Brick, are you trying to invite me to a party in your pants?

You don't strike me as the type who would enjoy low-brow humor, but, hey, you never know. My Anchormanisms are a tad rusty.

Re: Somehow ...

Oh, I can enjoy (some) lowbrow humour with the best of 'em — South Park, The Trailer Park Boys, Absolutely Fabulous, Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle (not the execrable sequel!) ...

But I confess I'm not familiar with that particular reference.

LJ rip-off/alternative

And all the cool kids seem to be flocking to it.

Why the cool kids are flocking: reason one

LJ type of service with what some of us round consider (or hope will be) a better business model - they are sticking with the invite and/or paid system that LJ had in the beginning instead of an ad-based system. There are many reasons why ads on a blogging system are problematic, such as blatantly homophobic ads coming up associated with matching keywords (e.g. queer, marriage, etc). Now LJ has pulled the ad after the fact, but fairestcat sums up why many people feel that an ad-based revenue scheme serves the content providers of a blogging system poorly.

You do not abandon Soviet Livejournal! Soviet Livejournal abandons YOU.

I've been really annoyed by the ads as well, but I had no idea they were so degrading and... ugh.

Why the cool kids are flocking: reason two +

2. The TOS is more transparent - and more inclusive. Whereas LJ includes everyone by not specifically excluding them, the DW TOS explicitly includes everyone.

3. Also the TOS, DW will stick to the legal requirements in terms of dealing with yanking content or users, and they will talk to you about it when they do so and look for reasonable alternatives whereever possible (as opposed to LJ which has yanked accounts in the past from such nefarious users as: fanfiction writers, woman using pictures of themselves breastfeeding in their user icons, people who create abuse survivor support communities who listed things like rape or incest in their interests as on-topic for the community, etc).

4. The Friends List is divided up into access (who can read your locked entries) and subscription (other people whos posts you read). It also doesn't refer to the combination of both/either/neither as Friends List, a terminology change that many people prefer as being lower drama (I like the division into 2 lists, I could care less about the labels myself)

You make a hell of a case for it. Which makes me even more annoyed I didn't speak up in your journal when I had the chance.

I have an account, but no invites apparently. I just submitted a request for an invite and will pass it along if they grant it.

(So far, not real exciting over there.)

I signed up for an account (via Openid), but don't know about invites.
